What are the risks of Brazilian buttock lift (BBL)?

In the last 5 years, Brazilian Buttock Lift (BBL) has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures worldwide. One of the reasons for this rise is the influence of Celebrities like Kim Kardashian, JLo, or Micky Minaj. These celebrities have produced a revolution when we talk about female body and bum size. But, let’s face it, they not only have time and money to look after their bodies, but also are surrounded by nutritionists and the best personal trainers all year long.

As BBL`s popularity increases, victims of this surgery do, too. It is a very complex procedure and only specialists must perform it. Always make sure you choose the best surgeon not the cheapest.

let`s go deeper and explain what the procedure involves!

What is BBL?

It is a fat transfer procedure that augments the size of your buttocks (more volume) and gives them a nice round shape.  During the procedure the surgeon takes excess fat from areas where you don’t need it, like hips, abdomen, lower back, arms, chin etc. These fats are removed through a procedure called liposuction.  Once the fats are extracted and cleaned; they are injected into the buttocks giving them a nice volume and shape.

Is Brazilian Buttock Lift safe?

This cosmetic surgery is safe, in fact it can help you to achieve the body you always wanted, and you couldn’t achieve with exercise. Problems start when you are not in the right hands; remember that not all surgeons can perform this aesthetic surgery, it requires not only experienced and skilled surgeons in liposuction but also they need to have skills in transferring the fat and giving you a nice shape. Don’t try to save money, look for a recognized surgeon with skills and experience in this procedure.

What complications may I expect from BBL?

To have success in this procedure, the fat graft needs optimal nutrition to begin with. Therefore, the surgeon needs to make sure the gluteal area has a good blood supply to help the nourishment and healing of the transferred fat.

Here it is when things could go wrong with the procedure, when the fat is injected too deep into the muscle, this could cause a rupture in deep blood vessels, allowing the fat to enter in your bloodstream causing embolism (brooked artery) ( https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/embolism/).

In your lungs, fat can block the entrance of oxygen to the bloodstream (pulmonary embolism), while in your brain it can cause a stroke, both of them can be lethal.

Other complications in this procedure are:

  • Internal bleeding
  • infections
  • Poor healing of the skin
  • Also, the fat cells injected could die and cause fat cell necrosis, it is a terrible infection with very bad outcomes (we see these cases often at our clinic).

What does the statistics say about fatalities as a result of the BBL procedure?

According to ASPS (American Society of Plastic Surgeons) this is the aesthetic surgery that is killing more patients in the USA.

The popularity of this surgery is growing fast worldwide. In 2018 surgeons made 20.300 BBLs.

While in other plastic surgeries patients die 1 in 55,000, in BBL interventions die 1 in 3,000.  In other words, from 20,301 BBL procedures almost 7,000 patients died, and numbers are growing around the world.

3 British women have died in the past 2 years.

There is a six-ford rise in cases needing urgent care due to complications after a low cost BBL`s surgeries performed abroad. It can cost the NHS almost 13,000 pounds per patient.

Many women are still in pain even two years after surgery.

Turkey, Belgium, Spain, Cyprus, Tunisia, Colombia, Argentina and France are regular destinations for BBL surgeries.

During the last six months 13 women died in Florida, and 1 woman is dying per month in Colombia and Brazil due to complications during BBL procedures.

Surgical associations emphasize that you have to be careful with finding a good plastic surgeon. There are people without certification offering their services to perform this procedure.
