What are the benefits of acupuncture? – a quick review

By | acupuncture | No Comments

Different approaches to health

There are numerous benefits of acupuncture. If you have had a positive experience you will no doubt be an advocate.

Some people, however, are more skeptical. It might not fit their model of how health care should work.

But the doubters should think again. Acupuncture is becoming more accepted by the medical community. It has been the subject of numerous medical studies. And these have by and large been extremely positive.

Acupuncture is now broadly accepted as a valid treatment for chronic pain. And the placebo effect has also been largely discounted.

Undoubtedly, the difference in opinion stems from the ideas of how our bodies work. Traditional medicine treats bodies as broken and in need of repair.

Conversely, acupuncture puts more faith in our body’s ability. It treats us as an organism that ordinarily functions well.  One that is capable of healing itself.

So how is this beneficial?

Staying on point

Does acupuncture work? Certainly, it has caused a lot of debate over recent years.

The mainstream often tries to discredit certain types of therapy. Acupuncture was often labeled ‘alternative’ in the past. Almost as an attempt to undermine its credibility.

But things have changed. It has gained in prominence. Of course, once celebrities started using it interest rose. For example, Chris Evans and Gwyneth Paltrow are both fans.

Remarkably, treatments have increased to over 4 million a year in recent years. People have turned to acupuncture more and more in the last 25 years. This coincides nicely with the formation of the British Acupuncture Council back in June 1995.

But do the studies back up the popularity? Let’s take a look.

Understanding acupuncture – and the ways it can help?

A background to acupuncture

To get an understanding of acupuncture, we need to look at its background.

Its roots go back a long way. In fact, over 2000 years. It was first practiced in China. The early form was based around the concept of ‘Qi’ energy.

It stemmed from a belief that there are lines of meridians that run around the body. They believed that energy blockages create pain and disease. And that, restoring the flow of energy helped to improve health and relieve pain.

Thus, with its long history, it clearly has a very well-established tradition. However, it didn’t arrive in Europe until the 17th Century. At that time, it was popular in France and Germany. It was lesser-known in Britain.

However, it has grown in prominence over recent years in the UK. This is due to its western-scientific approach to the practice. In addition, acupuncture is becoming increasingly well researched.
