Why do you need lymphatic drainage post- surgery?

Manual Lymph Drainage Massage (MLD) helps to move the fluid by gently pumping it back into the lymphatic vessels, reducing swelling, fluid retention and pain after the surgery. Without MLD, inflammation can evolve into fibrosis (a permanent hardening of the tissue) or a seroma (pocket of serum). Many doctors prescribe MLD Therapy after plastic surgery procedures for better results.

How many MLD treatments will I need?

For post-operative recovery, I usually recommend a course of 10 lymphatic drainage sessions. However, every recovery is different, and the number of treatments you may need will depend on the type of surgery, the areas treated, your stage of healing and how your body responds during recovery. Patients who have multiple procedures at the same time may require additional sessions.

What is lymphatic massage like?

Manual lymphatic drainage involves very gentle pumping movements like massage, to remove the excess of fluid from the treated area. The treatment should be gently and smooth but sometimes you could feel a bit of discomfort if the area is too sensitive after the surgery.

The first step on your treatment is to complete a medical form followed by the initial consultation where you therapist will assess the type of surgery and stage of healing (any open drainages, bruises, inflammation, etc.) to determinate the best way to perform the drainage. Here are some more ways that MLD can help with:

  • Encourages tissue regeneration
  • Reduces infection risk
  • Helps to shape the area
  • Improves surgery outcomes
