How to Prevent and Treat Seromas After Surgery

Cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries have become increasingly common in the UK over the past decade. While these procedures can enhance confidence and improve physical appearance, they also come with postoperative risks—one of the most frequent being seroma formation. Understanding what seromas are, why they occur, and how to prevent and manage them can significantly improve your recovery experience.

What Is a Seroma?

A seroma is a  pocket of fluid that can build up under the skin after surgery or an injury. It happens when tiny lymph vessels are disturbed during the procedure, causing clear fluid (called lymph) to collect in the area instead of draining naturally.

Sometimes the fluid isn’t completely clear, it may be mixed with a little blood or waste from the healing tissues, which can make it look yellow, pink, or even slightly red.

Seromas usually appear a week or two after surgery, often once any drainage tubes have been removed. They can feel like a soft or firm lump under the skin. Small seromas often go away on their own as the body reabsorbs the fluid, but larger ones may need to be checked or drained to prevent infection or slow healing.

Why Do Seromas Occur?

Seromas typically develop after extensive surgical procedures involving tissue removal, dissection, or disruption of lymphatic channels. Cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries with a higher risk include:

  • Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)
  • Liposuction or Body Contouring Procedures
  • Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL)
  • Breast Augmentation or Reduction
  • Mastectomy or Breast Reconstruction

Risk factors include:

  • obesity,
  • large surgical areas,
  • inadequate compression,
  • early vigorous movement after surgery.
  • flights

How to Prevent Seromas

Preventing seromas begins in the operating room and continues throughout your recovery:

  1. Surgical Drains:
Your surgeon may place small drainage tubes near the incision site to prevent fluid buildup. These are typically kept in place for several days post-surgery.

  2. Compression Garments:
Wearing a properly fitted compression garment helps minimize space where fluid can accumulate and supports lymphatic return.

  3. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD):
Early initiation of Manual Lymphatic Drainage, performed by a certified therapist who treats you better, can greatly assist in preventing seroma formation. MLD uses gentle, rhythmic movements to stimulate lymph flow, reduce swelling, and support tissue healing.

Recent evidence (2023–2024) supports MLD as an effective adjunct therapy in postoperative recovery, particularly for patients undergoing abdominoplasty and liposuction (Leduc et al., J Clin Med, 2023).

  4. Avoiding Strain:
Follow your surgeon’s activity recommendations. Overexertion can increase fluid production and delay healing.

Treating Seromas Naturally and Medically

Small seromas often resolve spontaneously within a few weeks as the body reabsorbs the fluid. To aid natural healing:

  • Continue MLD sessions as advised by your therapist.
  • Maintain adequate hydration and nutrition, as both support tissue repair and lymphatic health.
  • Use compression garments as directed.

In some cases, your healthcare provider may need to aspirate (drain) the seroma using a sterile needle. Persistent or encapsulated seromas may require minor surgical removal.

Seromas after surgery:When to Seek Medical Help?

While most seromas are benign, medical evaluation is essential if you experience any signs of infection or complications. Contact your surgeon immediately if:

  • You develop a fever or feel unwell.
  • The area becomes red, warm, painful, or tender.
  • Fluid accumulation increases rather than decreases.
  • The seroma does not improve after several weeks.
  • You notice hardening or pressure around the surgical area.

If infection occurs, the seroma may evolve into an abscess, requiring medical drainage and antibiotics.

A final word

Seromas are a common but manageable side effect of cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries. With proper surgical care, early manual lymphatic drainage, and vigilant postoperative management, the risk and impact of seromas can be significantly reduced. Always consult your surgeon and a certified lymphatic drainage therapist to ensure your recovery is safe and effective.

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD can help you

The benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD are enormous. In recent years, we have seen an increased number of research related to the benefits of this treatment and the number of patients looking for this treatment increased too. The reason why varie from patient to patient.  Some of them just had surgery and they want to get rid of retained fluid and recover faster; pregnant ladies want to reduce excess fluids, patients with autoimmune diseases want to make their systems work better; lipoedema and liphoedemapatients want to reduce inflammation and boost their immune function; other patients just want to eliminate toxins, and so on.  In this article we share with you how MLD can help naming some of the multiple benefits of this treatment.  So, let’s start with the basis.

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage MLD?

Manual lymphatic Drainage MLD is a massage technique that favors the lymphatic, circulatory and immune system. This gentle form of  rycthmic performance improves lymph flow, a colorless fluid that flows through the lymphatic vessels and nodes.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage consists of slow, gentle and circular rythmic movements performed in one direction (flollows the path of through the lymphatic nodes). Your specialised therapists will use her/his fingers or palms throughout your body in the direction of the lymphatic circulation. It is not a painful procedure, on the contrary, it is very relaxing. As it serves to promote the elimination of toxins, it also provides a feeling of well-being during and after the procedure.

What is the lymphatic system?

Your lymphatic system (part of your immune system) is a network of vessels and nodes that moves back a fluid called lymph into your bloodstream. The lymphatic system has many functions, some of them are:

  • Protects your body from invaders like: germs, viruses, infections, etc., which cause illness.
  • Maintains body fluid levels.
  • Boost immune function.
  • Absorbs digestive tract fats.
  • Removes cellular waste and toxins.

What is the lymph?

The lymph is a clear fluid (similar to blood) that contains nutrients and oxygen. It is deposited around the cells to keep them nourished. The cells are able to discard waste and toxic materials into this fluid. However, it flows slower than blood and is easily saturated by factors such as a sedentary lifestyle and poor diet. For this reason, MLD is so important because it helps to release any obstruction from the lymphatic system.

What are the benefits of MLD?

Manual lymphatic drainage has significant benefits for different health areas and purposes; for this reason, nowadays more health practitioners recommend it as part of their treatments. Some of these benefits are:

Therapeutic

  • Reduces inflammation in conditions like lipoedema and lymphoedema.
  • Complementary therapy for autoimmune conditions and more.
  • Stimulates kidney functions.
  • It’s useful for the treatment of blood circulation problems (venous insufficiency).
  • Helps to reduce lymphatic problems.
  • Stimulates the immune system, increasing the body’s own defenses.
  • Helps to protect your body against bacteria and viruses as it works in conjunction with the immune system.
  • It has a calming effect on the autonomic nervous system.
  • Its direct effect on the parasympathetic system generates a relaxing effect.
  • Tones the intestine, which helps fight constipation.
  • Regulates the body’s water balance.
  • Lowers blood pressure.
  • Reduces stress.

Sports

  • Helps to prepare your muscles for physical effort, this allows greater performance and better recovery.
  • Reduces pain and inflammation.

After surgical procedures

  • Post Surgical Lymphatic Drainage Massage helps to eliminate fluids accumulated during and after the procedure.
  • Help to reduce pain caused by the excess of fluids.
  • Reduces bruises that can appear after a liposuction procedure or other surgical procedures.
  • Prevents seroma.
  • Reduces fibrosis.
  • Speeds up the recovery process.
  • Reduces swelling.

Aesthetic

  • Reduces cellulite. It reduces fat deposits and stimulates circulation, as a result, it improves the condition of orange peel.
  • Improves the condition of tired legs.
  • Reduces problems associated with fluid retention,  poor circulation, and localized fat.
  • Helps reduce varicose veins.
  • Hydrates the skin and helps to revitalize it, considerably reducing wrinkles and stretch marks. .
  • Helps with shape definition.

Certainly, these effects can be achieved thanks to the movements and gentle pressure that favor cellular rejuvenation and the elimination of waste.

What to expect after the MLD?

  • First, thanks to the stimulation of kidney function your urine could become darker and smelly for one or two days.
  • Second, as MLD removes toxins through the urine it’s normal that your urination frequency increases for a few hours after the massage.
  • Third, swelling and inflammation will decrease.
  • In addition,  you will experience an amazing body relaxation and a feeling of general well-being. However, you could feel very tired and heavy after the drainage as your body is trying to get rid of the toxins.

Jaw pain? It might be TMJ disorder

 What is TMJ disorder?

Firstly, TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint which basically is your jaw. TMJ disorder is an umbrella term to describe a dysfunction or a condition which may have a negative impact on the function of the TMJ. It is suggested that approximately 75% of adults are experiencing one or more symptoms of the TMJ at some point in their life so it is quite common.

Jaw pain: What causes TMJ disorder?

Some of the most common causes of the TMJ disorder are:

1.Developmental issues of the TMJ such as underdevelopment or overdevelopment of the structure forming the TMJ.

2.TMJ disc disorders. TMJ disc is a structure that sits in the TMJ space providing cushioning and allowing for smooth TMJ movement.

3.Previous traumas to the TMJ such as:

  • Fractions of one or more bones that form the TMJ,
  • Dislocations or subluxations,
  • Forceful compression.

4.Inflammatory conditions which may affect the TMJ such as:

  • Capsulitis – an inflammation of the joint capsule.
  • Synovitis – an inflammation of the fluid within the joint.
  • Osteoarthritis of TMJ.

5.Local muscle tension around the jaw.

Jaw pain: What are the symptoms of TMJ disorder?

If you are experiencing the TMJ disorder, you can expect to feel one or several of the following:

  • Aching pain in or around your ear.
  • Aching facial pain.
  • Difficulty chewing or talking.
  • Pain while chewing.
  • Difficulties opening and closing your mouth.
  • Clicking of the jaw.
  • Locking of the jaw.
  • Pain in or around one or both sides of your jaw.
  • Tinnitus, which is ringing in one or both of your ears.

What is Lymph-buccal massage?

Lymph-Buccal Massage was designed to enhance beauty and relieve pain and tension in the jaw, face, and neck. Ideal for those with puffiness, sinus issues, inflammation, facial tension, teeth clenching, TMJ, or undergoing orthodontic treatments. This massage blends Buccal Massage, Lymphatic Drainage, Jaw Mobilization, and Myofascial Release. Enjoy the therapeutic benefits of lymphatic massage and get rid of pain while improving muscle tone and facial mobility.

What to expect during a Buccal massage treatment?

Firstly, your therapist will conduct the subjective assessment which involves her asking a few questions regarding your presenting complaint. Once your therapist gathered enough information, she will then decide if buccal massage is a safe treatment modality for you. Once this has been established, it is very likely that you will be laid on your back and your therapist will be treating your face and neck using a unique-developed treatment that will give you relieve from pain and enhance your general wellbeing.

How can lymph-buccal massage help with TMJ disorder?

Your therapist might be able to help you to further understand the cause of your TMJ disorder if you have not been given one yet. According to a study by S. Blood, TMJ disorder can also be correlated with other areas of the body such as fluid dynamics, fascia, respiratory and cardiovascular systems and more, hence, lymph-buccal massage might be exactly what you are looking for to help you to manage jaw pain. Other benefits are:

  • Jaw & Tension Relief: Specifically designed for those with jaw tension, TMJ (Temporomandibular Disorder), or who are prone to stress-related tension. This treatment alleviates pain and discomfort while improving overall relaxation.
  • Aesthetic Enhancement: Sculpted cheeks, a defined jawline, and a lifted, rejuvenated facial appearance.
  • Detox & Circulation Boost: Improves lymphatic and blood circulation, reducing puffiness, and promoting a healthier, more vibrant complexion.
  • Relaxation & Mood Enhancement: Promotes deep relaxation, reduces stress, and enhances mood through targeted muscle relaxation and facial toning.

The Road to Recovery: 5 Expert Tips for running recovery

We would like to help you with your recovery from the London Marathon. But, first of all, congratulations! If you completed the run it must be a huge relief. What once may have seemed like an impossible challenge is now achieved. You have completed the London Marathon. It’s time to put your feet up … literally!

London Marathon 2024 Recovery – Physical

One of the most important parts of the recovery is the physical aspect, but never forget the emotional one. No one could have described how physically depleted you would feel after the event, but now you know! It would have been too frightening to contemplate how severe the after-effects of the run would be. The truth of the matter is, you have put your body through shock.

Put another way, you have put your body through mild trauma. It was all for a good cause, but the extent of what you have gone through shouldn’t be underestimated. In these early days, your body is far more vulnerable in many ways. Your immune system is more compromised. Your muscular-skeletal system has taken a battering. And your digestion and sleep may still become compromised.

5 Rs – Rest, Repair, Rehydration, Replenish, Rehabilitation

Here is a guide to managing the physical aspect of your London Marathon recovery. I would encourage you to focus on what I call the 5Rs … rest, rehydration, repair, replenishment and rehabilitation.

1.Rest is very  important

First and foremost you need to rest. Estimates vary on how long you should have a complete rest from running for. Experts say from a minimum of a week up to 2 or 3 weeks. If you are a novice runner I would strongly advise you to be cautious. Don’t let your recent success lure you back into pounding the pavement too soon.

If you rest for 2 or 3 weeks, the loss in terms of your cardiovascular fitness will be minimal. On the other hand, the long-term benefits of the rest will be substantial. Once you’re in a position to start training again, you will quickly be able to regain that same level of fitness. And, what’s more, you have the added bonus of your newly acquired muscle memory.

2.Allow time for Body Repair

Next, you must start to think about repairing the body. There are some critical elements to the repair process. Among them are good nutrition, rehydration (on an ongoing basis) and ensuring good circulation. Good circulation is so crucial. Blood carries the oxygen and nutrients to the cells that help repair the body. Good circulation facilitates this.

The goal at this stage is to abstain from or minimise the time spent running. You’ll need to seek alternative means of boosting circulation. You can look at gentle alternatives for your cardio-vascular work such as swimming or cycling. Or, better still, book in for a restorative sports massage and a Manual Lymphatic Drainage.

3 and 4. Replenish and rehabilitation

You also need to replenish your body. Crucially you need to restock on electrolytes. Here are some top tips on what to eat for your London Marathon recovery:

  • Soup
  • Olives
  • Seaweed
  • Tomatoes
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Raisins
  • Nuts
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Lentils
  • Protein: eggs, meat, fish, chicken, pork (what you like the most!)
  • Drink Plenty of water

These foods will help replenish the body’s sodium, chloride, potassium, calcium, protein and magnesium needs. Magnesium, in particular, will help you fight fatigue.

5. Rehabilitation.

This crucially involves two components, long gentle stretching and further post-event massage massage.

London Marathon 2024- Psychological and Emotional Recovery

Many people get a sense of sadness after completing the Marathon. This is partly because something that allowed them to be so completely focused has been taken away. But, it is also because the enormous physical demands on the body have a corresponding effect on the emotions. Here some tips that will help you…

Set a new goal  or challenge

Good food and nutrition, as well as plenty of sleep and rest, will help you deal with your emotions. However, it can also be of enormous benefit to set yourself a new goal or challenge. This doesn’t have to be another endurance event, but if you have trained cautiously and started to enjoy your running, you might want to consider entering shorter distances in a few months time. It would, after all, seem a shame to waste your new found ability.

If not running, then perhaps find a totally new challenge; possibly that doesn’t involve pounding the streets for hours on end on a cold November  morning!

We hope this information is useful. If you need advice or have any questions about our treatments, please contact us. You can find us in Mill Hill and Islington. We are always glad to help. If you like this blog, please share!

Share your new goals  after the London Marathon or  challenge with us!

Run London Like a Pro: Unusual Tips for Success

It’s time to start putting together the last bits to your training plan for the London Marathon 2024. At this point the big day is less than one a week away.

Now is the time when you should have reduced those long runs. And although you are probably fatigued and short of time, it’s time to start planning for the lead up to, and for the run itself.

Participating in the London Marathon is an amazing experience, that is why it’s important to train your mind and body. Also, you can get the advantage of expert unusual tips to give your best while enjoying the event. Here are some unconventional tips to help you tackle the race successfully and full of energy and joy.

Don´t Rush, just Run: Purchases Before Race day

These are few things you should buy before the day of the London Marathon

 1. Invest in a hydration belt

You will know by now that hydration is a huge part of running. There are regular water stations on the marathon course. However, they can get congested and cause you anxiety. With a hydration belt, you are in control. And it gives you somewhere convenient to store your energy gels. It will also come in handy for your remaining long runs. These belts are very lightweight, and the good ones are very comfortable.

2. Get some Vaseline and tape to keep distractions out of your way

Most people get surprised by distractions, but you can avoid most of them; let me tell you how: If it is hot, you’ll want to keep the sweat out of your eyes. Simply by applying a little Vaseline above the line of the eyebrows, the sweat from your forehead will stay out of your eyes.

Vaseline can also be used to avoid jogger’s nipple (irritation caused by the friction of the T-shirt on your nipples).

On the other hand, if it is windy on race day, some tape can be very useful. A pinned race number will flap around and annoy you. Simply by tapping your running number to your running vest, you can avoid that distraction.

3. Try  Meditation or Mindfulness

If you haven’t tried mindfulness or meditation, give them a go. They are great tools to help relieve anxiety before the event. You’ll sleep better, too. If you haven’t done it before, simply follow the instructions and allow yourself to relax; you can find meditation and mindfulness guides in apps, you tube, Spotify, etc.

Run London- Before Race day

4. Learn the lyrics to a new song

Why?: This one is highly unusual but serves a purpose. Even a couple of verses will do. The idea is to give yourself something to distract you when the going gets tough. Singing to yourself (silently) at miles 22 or 23 could be a novel idea for getting you over the hump.

5. Schedule in some Post event massage

Modern athletes invest in healing techniques! There is a reason for this. A massage is a wonderful form of rehabilitation from strenuous exercise. Your body has taken a hammering during your training. You need to replenish the muscles as much as possible before you reach the start line. So book up some restorative sessions now before the rush starts.

Run London: Unusual Tips for Race day

6. Be social

Make the day a memorable experience. To help reduce anxiety, chat to fellow runners. Especially in the early miles. (Providing they are ok with it!). It is a good way to monitor your exertion rate too. In the early miles, you should be going slow enough to hold a short conversation.

7. Look ahead

  • Try focusing your gaze about 100 feet ahead of you. If you start to look toward your feet, your posture will suffer. And poor posture will hamper your running efficiency.
  • Keep your posture tall, shoulders relaxed, and arms swinging smoothly. Engage your core muscles for stability.
  • Look  up, it also means you will get to experience more of the event.
  • Maintain good running form throughout the race to conserve energy and reduce the risk of injury.

8. Run smart, find the right path

There are little tricks you can do to beat the weather.

  • If it’s hot, try and find the most shaded parts of the course on the way around. Anything that keeps your body temperature down will help you in the long run.
  • On the other hand, if it is windy, run directly behind a small group. Shielding yourself from the wind will help you conserve energy.

9. Position your loved ones wisely

The crowd will lift you. And possibly more than you can possibly imagine. But the crowd thins out on certain parts of the course.

Seeing your loved ones (friends and family) will give you a special lift. Try and get them to stand away from the main crowd so they are easily seen, and can encourage you when you need it most.

10. Know how you will get much-needed energy

Towards the end of the run, your glycogen levels start to get depleted. That’s why energy gels come in handy at this stage. But they are not to everyone’s taste.

As a more palatable alternative, you can get the extra energy from mashed up bananas. These are easy to digest. Simply put them in a freezer bag, cut off one corner and tape over the open corner. Keep it in your hydration pack as a much-needed reserve store for the last leg of the marathon. Rip off the tape, and you are ready to go.

11.Proper recovery

After crossing the finish line, prioritize recovery to aid in muscle recovery and reduce soreness. Refuel with a combination of carbohydrates and protein, hydrate well, and consider gentle stretching or foam rolling. Last, but not least, get your post-event massage to get rid of the stress and give your muscles a faster recovery. Hope you enjoy the event!

Maximize your miles: Why should Massage be part of my training plan?

Massage is one of the best allies you can have while training and post the London Marathon. Why?, as part of your training sessions can help stretch and relax tense muscles, remove adhesions between your fascia and muscles, and increase muscle blood flow which  leads to better performance and reduces injuries. After-running massage can aid in reducing perceived pain and soreness, improve immune function and lower inflammation, and improves your overall well-being by reducing anxiety, stress and fatigue. Now, let’s go deeper on what massage can do for you and how…

When should I have a massage?

You can have a massage at any moment. However, it is important for you to know  that the timing and technique of massage largely depends on your needs  and when the race is. In other words, getting the wrong type of massage too close to the day of the marathon can impair performance and even result in an increased risk of injury, while a lighter massage technique, like lymphatic drainage,  may be beneficial at any point before a race day to promote better lymphatic and blood flow, also, boosting your immune system. This massage should be performed from 3 to 5 days before the race.

On the other hand, post-marathon massage is key to muscle recovery, but it is recommended to wait at least two hours after the race ends to avoid impairing lactic acid removal and to allow the muscles to start the healing process more thoroughly. After this period of time, you will have all the benefits of massage. This massage can be performed from 2 to 72 hours after the race.

What is the best massage for runners?

There are people who suggest a specific type of massage for runners, but actually what really works (and this is the way you know your therapist is an experienced professional) is when your massage therapist uses different techniques during the session. You may question why, and the answer is because the treatment should be tailored according to your needs.

For example, during a massage session, you may notice therapeutic techniques aimed at increasing blood and lymphatic flow throughout your body and easing muscle tension, or deep tissue massage, which is more targeted and manipulates the muscles more rigorously to help with the healing process and prevent a buildup of scar tissue.

The commercial name of this massage  is Sports Massage as it  combines different massage modalities. It also specializes in treating  sports injuries, but a therapist with experience will be able to tailor the massage to your needs.

Why should massage be part of my training plan for the London Marathon?

Some of the most important reason you should include massage as part of your training plan and post event recovery treatment are:

Injury Prevention

Regular massage can help identify tight spots, adhesions, or imbalances in the muscles and fascia, allowing them to be addressed before they develop into more serious injuries. It can also improve flexibility and range of motion, reducing the risk of strains and sprains.

Pain Relief

Many runners experience muscle tightness, discomfort or pain, especially in areas like the calves, hamstrings, and quadriceps. Massage helps you to  reduce tension and pain by promoting relaxation and loosening tight muscles.

Improved Performance

After certain number of massage sessions you may notice how massage helps you by:

  • enhancing muscle recovery,
  • reducing muscle tension,
  • increasing flexibility,
  • running faster and farther,
  • doing less effort while training or during the race.

Muscle Recovery

Running puts  significant strain on muscles, as a result, you may have soreness and fatigue. Massage and MLD help you to speed up  muscle recovery by increasing blood and lymphatic flow to the muscles, which aids in the removal of metabolic waste products like lactic acid.

Mental Relaxation

Training for the Marathon is physically and mentally demanding. Massage helps you to relax, reducing stress and anxiety and promoting a general sense of wellbeing.

What are pre-event and post-event massages?

Pre-event massage

Pre-event massage can be stimulating, it uses massage techniques such as hacking, kneading and beating and pounding.  It is vigorous and prepares you mentally for performance. Also a  pre-event massage can  be relaxing and the aim is to help to reduce stress levels  and calm nerves before the Marathon or event. It should be performed 2 or 5 days before the race.

Post -event massage

Post-event massage uses light pressured techniques alongside passive stretching to help regain normal muscle resting lengths after strenuous exercise. A post-event massage helps you treat and prevent delayed onset muscles, fatigue and tightness.

In short…

Making massage as part of your training plan and routine can help optimize performance, prevent injuries, and promote overall well being. Don´t forget to include proper training, strength training, good nutrition, and rest days.

Vaser lipo: Why is it different from traditional lipo?

Thinking about undergoing liposuction? You have heard a lot about Vaser lipo, but you haven’t decided if it is best for you? It’s important for you to know that both procedures (traditional and Vaser lipo) do not treat obesity. They are designed to get rid of that annoying stubborn fat that is no longer responsive to exercise and diet. Here, some info that I hope will help you to clear up your doubts. In this blog, you will find: what Vaser liposuction (Vaser lipo) is; its most important characteristics; and why it is different from traditional liposuction. Let’s start with the basics…

What is Vaser liposuction or Vaser lipo?

It is a type of liposuction that uses ultrasonic frequencies to break up and emulsify (turn into liquid) fat cells. After that, this fat is removed from the body without damaging any surrounding cells or tissues, like vessels, etc., which is key to healing faster and reducing side effects like fibrosis. This procedure is minimally invasive for that reason, it just needs local anesthesia. Vaser lipo is a walk-in walk-out procedure.

What areas can be treated with Vaser lipo?

  • Arms
  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Hips
  • Neck
  • Chin
  • Thighs
  • Chest

What you should know about Vaser lipo: Why is it different from traditional lipo?

  • Technology: Vaser liposuction utilizes ultrasound energy to selectively target and emulsify fat cells while leaving other tissues relatively unharmed.
  • Fat Emulsification: the ultrasonic energy emulsifies the fat, making it easier to remove. This can potentially lead to smoother results compared to traditional liposuction.
  • Precision: Its technology allows more precise fat cell  targeting. As a result, you will have less side effects, (e.g. seroma, fibrosis, bruising, etc.) better contouring and sculpting outcomes.
  • Recovery Time: As happens in traditional lipo, Vaser lipo Recovery time can vary between individuals and also and how effective your post surgery treatment is. Post surgery experts say that, in general, Vaser lipo patients heal faster than traditional lipo ones (but each case is different). Remember that the sooner you start your post surgery treatment, wear your faja (24/7) and follow your surgeons and post surgery therapist instructions the faster you will heal. In addition, you will get the best outcomes.
  • Skin Tightening: Another benefit of Vaser liposuction is that it promotes skin tightening due to the thermal energy produced during the ultrasonic process. This can help reduce the risk of loose or sagging skin after fat removal.
  • Cost: Vaser liposuction tends to be more expensive than traditional liposuction due to the specialised technology and techniques it uses.
  • Cellulite: This type of lipo improves the appearance of cellulite, but it does not eliminate it.

Has Vaser Lipo any risks or side effects?

As in all these types of cosmetic procedures, Vaser lipo has a risk (lower than other types of procedures) of:

  •  infection
  • bruising
  • swelling
  • discomfort
  • skin irregularities

What is Traditional liposuction?

Traditional liposuction or  suction-assisted liposuction (SAL), is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes excess fat deposits from specific areas of the body. During the procedure your surgeon will:

  •  Use general anesthesia.
  • Make small incisions in the skin near the targeted area.
  • Inserting a cannula (thin, hollow tube).
  • Make back and forth movements with the cannula to break up and remove fat cells.
  • The cannula is  connected to a vacuum device that suctions out the fat cells.
  • Close the incisions that need it.

Where can traditional lipo be performed?

  • Upper arms.
  • Buttocks.
  • Calves and ankles.
  • Abdomen.
  • Chest and back.
  • Hips and thighs.
  • Chin and neck.

Risks or side effects of traditional lipo

After the procedure, Patients may experience:

  •  bruising,
  • swelling,
  • pain and discomfort in the treated and surrounding areas,
  • skin irregularities,
  • higher risk of fibrosis and seroma,
  • contour irregularities,
  • blood clots (as blood vessels can be damaged by the cannula repetitive movement during the procedure),
  • anaesthesia risks.

Don´t forget the post surgery treatment

Last, but not least, keep in mind that both procedures need to start the post surgery treatment as soon as possible. Time is pivotal in your healing process (the faster you start the treatment, the sooner you will recover and have better results). So if you are having surgery in Turkey (or any place), you´ll need to start your sessions as soon as you arrive in London.

The post surgery treatment uses  different manual/massage techniques (manual lymphatic drainage and others) and mechanical techniques (ultrasound, radiofrequency, etc.). The minimum number of sessions are 10 and that amount will increase according to your healing needs, some patients need 30 or 40, each case is different. Also, it’s important that you know that, at the beginning,  the sessions must be performed on close dates  or daily if necessary,  in order to reduce post surgery risks. Before your first session, I´ll give you a list with all you will need during the treatment.

If you have doubts, don´t hesitate to contact me; I´ll answer your questions. I´m always glad to help!

A final word

Ultimately, the choice between Vaser liposuction and traditional liposuction depends on your needs, budget and desired outcomes. Talk to your surgeon and post surgery therapist, they can help you to have a wider view of both procedures and how to fulfill your needs.

Fact or Fiction: Is Post Lipo Fibrosis Permanent?

Fibrosis is a natural healing process (tissues that try to get together again). It occurs after liposuction due to  tissue damage caused during the procedure. Many factors can be the cause of post lipo fibrosis like trauma, inadequate compression garment, lack of post surgery treatment, etc. Symptoms of fibrosis may include lumps, pain, skin hardening, and sensitivity. This is just a few of the most common concerns patients have before undergoing liposuction. I wrote this blog because I want to tell you the truth and dispel all your concerns about fibrosis after liposuction; if it can be permanent or not; and what Manual Lymphatic Drainage. Let’s start!

1. What is fibrosis after lipo?

Fibrosis after liposuction is when your body develops excessive scar tissue in response to tissue damage. Fibrosis is a natural part of your body’s healing process, and it is necessary to connect your tissues.  However, in some cases, your body may produce an excessive amount of this connective tissue (scar tissue), leading to complications. Factors such as, lack of compression, genetics, individual healing, surgical techniques used can influence the likelihood and severity of fibrosis.

2. Does fibrosis after lipo go away?

Yes, if you treat it early and with the right techniques and equipment. The extent to which fibrosis resolves can vary depending on various factors such as your own healing process, the techniques used during liposuction, the size of the treated area and the correct post surgery after care.

3.Is fibrosis after lipo permanent?

NO, if you treat it early, with the right techniques and equipment, and by someone with experience in the management of fibrosis. The extent to which fibrosis resolves can vary depending on various factors such as your own healing process, the techniques used during liposuction, the size of the treated area and the correct post surgery after care.

Mild to moderate fibrosis reduces  in the first 3 months, if treated properly and early with right treatment and compression. However, severe fibrosis may persist and can potentially cause discomfort or cosmetic issues. A fibrosis treatment is a long process and it needs patience, it is not a quit fix. Patients might have the misconception that fibrosis can be treated just with 5 massage sessions just because it feels hard. That is why, I would like to clarify that  massage doesn’t treat fibrosis nor Lymphatic drainage by themselves. We are dealing here with a tissue that is inflamed, trying to connect and heal. Some Massage techniques are  contraindicated in the presence of inflammation. So, if anyone offers you just a massage to treat your fibrosis, please,  run away! as deep massage causes more inflammation, therefore more fibrosis and leaves you with loose skin.

4. How long does post lipo fibrosis last?

It depends, as each body heals differently, there isn’t a magic number, I am afraid. The extent to which fibrosis resolves can vary depending on various factors such as:

  1.  your own healing process,
  2. the techniques used during liposuction,
  3. the size of the treated area,
  4. the amount of extracted fat,
  5. the correct post surgery after care,
  6. and more.

Based on my experience, mild to moderate fibrosis after liposuction may resolve within 3 to 6 months, However, in some cases, particularly if there are complications or if excessive scar tissue forms, fibrosis may persist for a longer period and you may need another surgery to correct it.

5.How do you break down fibrotic tissue?

You can use different techniques and equipment to break down fibrosis, this depends on the type of fibrosis and how long you have it for. The older the fibrosis is, the harder it is to break it down. Early stages of fibrosis respond well to good Lymphatic drainage techniques, but if the fibrosis becomes hard and lumpy you need more than just lymphatic drainage. If your massage techniques are too hard, like deep tissue, to try to break the fibrosis, you will create more inflammation, therefore more damage and the body will generate more fibrosis to repair and everything will become a circle. If you developed  fibrosis, find someone especilised in the management of this kind of condition to help you before your fibrosis becomes a permanent scar tissue.

I hope this blog has helped to dispel some of your doubts. For further information about fibrosis after liposuction and available treatments for it, you can visit our blogs: causes of post lipo fibrosis and how to treat fibrosis after liposuction.

Enhancing Digestive Health with Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) can indeed have several benefits for belly function and to get relief from digestive disorders, particularly concerning digestion. In this blog, I´ll show you what MLD is, how it helps to reduce belly inflammation and what digestive disorders can be treated with this wonderful technique. SO, let ‘s start!

What is Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique. Its main purpose is to stimulate the lymphatic system, which helps the body remove waste and toxins,  supports your immune system, etc. First, your therapist will apply this massage technique to unaffected areas to help the fluid or wastes move out of the affected area. In other words,  She will decongest  the entire treated area. That is to say, MLD is part of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

How can MLD help with digestive problems?

While MLD primarily focuses on improving lymphatic and waste circulation, it can also benefit digestive problems by:

  •  reducing inflammation,
  • improving lymph and blood flow,
  • moving wastes and promoting their expel,
  • reducing bloating,
  • improving gut natural movement,
  • promoting detoxification,
  • enhancing nutrient absorption,
  • regulate bowel movement,
  • relieving abdominal discomfort,
  • and enhancing overall immune function.

However, it’s important to note that MLD is not a direct or a unique treatment for digestive issues, but it can support conventional treatments, too.

How is MLD performed for digestive disorders?

If you have never received a manual lymphatic drainage massage  before, here you have a list of what you can expect during your treatment session:

  • You will be in a lying position in order to have a better approach to your inner organs.
  • The session starts and ends with diaphragmatic breathing (if you don’t know how to do it, don´t worry! I will be there to help you and teach you).
  • The unaffected belly area and  lymph nodes will be treated first (to start the decongestive therapy).
  • Then, your therapist moves proximal to distal to drain the affected areas.
  • She uses slow and rhythmic movements with gentle pressure – this is essential.

How long does a MLD session last?

In most cases, each session lasts  30 to 45 minutes. Your therapist performs it in a specific sequence, using a series of massage techniques. Those techniques include soft and gentle stretching, compressing, gliding, and cupping motions.

What are the Digestive disorders that MLD can treat?

Here are some digestive problems that might benefit from MLD:

1.Constipation:

MLD can help stimulate the movement of waste through the intestines, potentially relieving constipation by promoting peristalsis, the wave-like contractions of your digestive tract that move food through the intestines. This can promote more efficient digestion and alleviate symptoms such as bowel obstruction or sluggish bowel movements.

2.Bloating and Gas:

This technique improves lymphatic circulation, MLD may help reduce fluid retention and alleviate bloating. Additionally, it could aid in the movement of gas through the digestive tract, potentially reducing discomfort.

3.Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS):

MLD cannot cure IBS, however,  it may help manage symptoms such as abdominal pain and bloating by reducing inflammation and promoting relaxation.

4.Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD):

MLD will give you relief from symptoms, such as abdominal pain and discomfort, by reducing inflammation and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.

5.Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

MLD may help relax the abdominal muscles and promote overall relaxation, potentially reducing symptoms like heartburn.

6.Digestive Disorders Associated with Lymphatic Congestion:

Some digestive problems may be linked to lymphatic congestion or sluggish lymphatic flow. For that reason,  MLD can help improve lymphatic circulation, reducing inflammation and giving you relief  to digestive discomfort.

A final word…

It is key that you ask your GP or a qualified healthcare professional before using MLD for digestive issues, especially if you have an underlying medical condition or are currently undergoing treatment. While MLD is safe, it may not be suitable for everyone, each case is different so results may vary from patient to patient. For that reason, the treatment is always tailored according to your needs and condition. Last but not least, MLD must be performed by a specialized therapist to ensure safety and effectiveness of the treatment. Always look for those who treat you better!

“Bye, bye Fibrosis”: 7 treatments that help to break down fibrosis after aesthetic surgery

Breaking down fibrosis  after aesthetic surgery (like liposuction, BBL or Tummy tuck) requires tailored treatments to alleviate discomfort, reduce inflammation, pain and address tissue irregularities; in order to get the best results. In this blog, we´ll explore seven methos that will make you say “bye” to this uncomfortable issue. But first, let´s start with the basics…

Fibrosis after liposuction, BBL or  tummy tuck, is part of the healing process and occurs when your body develops excessive fibers of fibroblast ( made of collagen) creating irregularities in  the tissue.  Factors such as, lack of compression, genetics, individual healing, used surgical techniques can influence the likelihood and severity of fibrosis.

Patients may experience fibrosis between 1 to 12 weeks after surgery, with some cases presenting later. Symptoms of fibrosis include:

  • Local pain
  • hard lumps
  • skin discoloration
  • irregularities, retractions
  • skin adhesions
  • limited movement (lack of  tissue flexibility)
  • complex scar tissue formation (overproduction of scar tissue)
  • Seroma (accumulated fluid pocket)

To get the best outcomes, the treatment should be  tailored to each patient depending on the stage of the healing and the characteristics of their fibrosis at the moment of the consultation.

Break down Fibrosis: How do you treat fibrosis after liposuction, BBL or Tummy tuck?

There are 7 proven methos to break down fibrosis after aesthetic surgery, let´s know them!

1. Massage modalities

  • Manual lymphatic drainage

This  massage technique specializes and helps to stimulate lymphatic flow and reduce swelling. It may also break down fibrosis (fibrous tissue) and improve the smoothness of the skin when done properly. Manual lymphatic drainage is essential in the first week of your recovery. The quicker your body absorbs or eliminates the excess of  fluids, the easier your skin can attach  and the body will create less fibrosis.

  •  Scar tissue/ fibrosis massage

This massage technique targets  deep scar tissue fibers. The massage can help break down fibrous adhesions and improve the flexibility and mobility  in the surgery area. Scar tissue massage isn’t a deep tissue massage. Your therapist must perform this massage carefully and gently in order to avoid further damage and irritation of the tissue.  For that reason, you should look for a qualified healthcare professional, such as a physiotherapist  or  massage therapist, who has experience in working with scar tissue.

2. Adequate compression

  • Use of Faja or Garment

A compression garment (faja) can help to minimize swelling and related discomfort after surgery. Maintaining constant pressure on the surgical site will prevent excess build-up of subcutaneous fluid  or swelling, and encourage your body to reabsorb the fluid that it has been accumulating.

Wear your compression garment  24/7, between 4 to 6 weeks  (with the exception of showering or during your post op treatment ). The exact timeframe will vary depending on your body healing process, the type of procedure you had and any additional factors determined by your plastic surgeon or  therapist. After their approval you can wear the garment for 12 hours per day (day or night, that it´s up to you) for several weeks (until your fibrosis breaks down).

Take into account that if your faja is too tight, it will reduce blood  and oxygen flow which increases fibrosis, so wear the appropriate compression garment. If you are not sure about the right compression, you can contact me, I´ll be glad to help!

  •  Additional padding: 360 foam/ lipo foam

Compression foam plays a vital role in the post-op recovery  after cosmetic surgery. Unlike traditional pressure garments,  foam provides even pressure over the treated area, leading to even healing and better results.

Experts recommend 360 foam when you have fibrosis in the back and abdomen (e.g. after lipo 360). Some of the reasons I recommend it, are: it doesn´t move from place; It gives you uniform compression in abdomen and back. Besides, it doesn´t allow the formation of  skin irregularities, thanks to its structure. 360 foam is a hole unit that uses a Velcro fastening system in  the back. In addition, it adds extra compression (you can tight it as much as you want). If you can find it, it will be the best option to compress large areas such as abdomen and back.

Other type of foam I recommend is a lipo foam compression sheet.  Experts recommend lipo foam for the abdominal area after liposuction if 360 foam isn’t available.  Lipo foam works wonders in areas like the chin, arms, legs and upper back.

Both 360 foam and Lipo foam help to:

  • form a barrier between the garment and the skin,
  •  prevent  sink burns,
  • avoid discomfort, marking, creasing and digging of the faja,
  • apply uniform pressure on the skin reducing swelling and bruises,
  • improve body shape generating a molding effect,
  • provide even distribution of the fat cells, as a result, you will have better body shape and appearance.

3. Equipment

  •  Ultrasound Therapy:

Ultrasound therapy uses high-frequency sound waves to penetrate deep into tissues, generating heat and promoting circulation. In the management of fibrosis, ultrasound therapy helps to:

  • reduce inflammation,
  • break down scar tissue, by promoting tissue relaxation and increasing the flexibility of collagen fibers,
  • aid in softening and reducing the density of the scar tissue,
  • improve range of motion,
  • reduce pain and stiffness.

It’s important that  a qualified healthcare professional, such as a physical therapist or physician,  treats you with ultrasound because these kind of specialist can assess the tissue and tailor the treatment according to your needs.

  •  Radiofrequency (RF) Therapy

Radiofrequency(RF)  therapy uses energy to heat the skin and underlying tissues, stimulating collagen production, and promoting skin tightening. This can be beneficial in reducing the appearance of fibrosis. South American surgeons recommend Monopolar radiofrequency to treat fibrosis. However, they use it only at the end of the proliferative phase of the healing.

  •  Cavitation

Cavitation ultrasound uses focused ultrasound waves.  Experts use it to soften the trapped adipose (fat) within the fibrotic tissue beneath the skin. This can be beneficial in reducing the appearance of fibrosis. Cavitation is only beneficial for the patient if introduced at the right stage of the healing. On the other hand, if used for prolonged time and the wrong settings, it could increase the production of fibrosis due to the nature of the ultrasound waves.

4. Laser Therapy

Laser treatments stimulate collagen production and improve skin texture.  Experts use different types of lasers according to the specific characteristics of the fibrosis. I haven’t used lessers yet in my post surgery treatments, so i can’t comment in this machine, but i know some surgeons recommended.

5.Exercise

Gentle exercises, including stretching and targeted movements, I always recommend to improve tissue flexibility and break down fibrous adhesions.

6.Medications – Corticosteroid Injections

In severe cases, corticosteroid injections may be considered to reduce inflammation and soften fibrous tissue. This is typically used in cases where the fibrosis is more pronounced and  tissue didn’t respond to other treatments. Your surgeon is the only professional who can prescribe them.

7.Surgical Revision

In severe cases, surgical revision may be considered to address persistent irregularities. This involves additional surgery to remove or reposition excess fat, scar tissue  and reshape the treated area. Your surgeon will recommend this procedure just in extreme cases or when other treatments have failed.

Please make sure you find a professional specialised in post-surgery after care as not all the equipment and techniques listed above can be used in each patient. In addition, not all the equipment can be used in the same appointment. A  well experienced professional will be able to combine the equipment and techniques based on your particular needs.

Break down fibrosis: in short…

It is crucial to seek professional guidance from a specialized post-surgery  after care provider who can tailor a treatment plan based on individual needs. Early intervention and adherence to recommended protocol can effectively manage fibrosis post-surgery. Approximately 80% of fibrosis cases can be successfully treated with manual techniques and proper compression methods when overseen by a skilled post-surgery specialist.
