What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic condition that predominantly affects women, causing a disproportionate build-up of fatty tissue, usually around the hips, thighs and legs, and sometimes the arms.

Affected areas may feel heavy, tender or painful, bruise easily and develop an uneven or nodular texture. Lipoedema is not caused by a person’s weight and can affect women of any body size.

How I Can Support You

Lipoedema can be difficult to recognise and is often misunderstood. I take time to listen to your experience, help you understand the condition and discuss practical ways to manage your symptoms, including lymphatic treatment, compression, nutrition, appropriate exercise and self-management.

Where appropriate, I can also measure and prescribe made-to-measure compression garments as part of your ongoing lipoedema management.

How Can Lipoedema Be Managed?

Understanding Your Condition

Learning how lipoedema affects your body, what can influence your symptoms and what you can do to manage them can help you make informed choices and take a more active role in your care.

Compression

Compression is an important part of managing lipoedema symptoms. Properly fitted garments can help reduce heaviness and discomfort, support the tissues and improve mobility.

Movement & Exercise

Regular movement is important, but low-impact exercise such as walking, swimming, cycling, yoga or Pilates may be more comfortable, particularly when high-impact activity increases pain, soreness or bruising.

Anti-Inflammatory Nutrition

An anti-inflammatory approach focuses on reducing processed foods, added sugars and unnecessary additives, and returning to simple, natural foods cooked from scratch wherever possible. This can support overall health while also helping with the management of inflammation and lipoedema symptoms.

Lymphatic & Specialist Care

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can help manage swelling, heaviness and discomfort. I also teach Self-Lymphatic Drainage (SLD), showing you the correct techniques and direction of lymphatic flow so you can safely continue supporting your lymphatic system at home.

Lipoedema Surgery

For some people, specialist lipoedema liposuction may be considered to remove affected fatty tissue and improve symptoms and mobility. Techniques such as Water-Assisted Liposuction (WAL) are specifically used in lipoedema surgery. Assessment by an experienced lipoedema surgeon is essential.
