Why do you need lymphatic drainage post- surgery?

Manual Lymph Drainage Massage (MLD) helps to move the fluid by gently pumping it back into the lymph vessels, reducing the swelling, retention of fluids and pain after the surgery. Without MLD, the inflammation can evolve into fibrosis (a permanent hardening of the tissue) or a seroma (pocket of serum). Many doctors prescribe MLD Therapy after plastic surgery procedures for better results.

How many MLD treatments will I need?

We normally recommend between 5 to 12 lymphatic drainage sessions depending on the area, procedure and the recovering process which is deferent in each person. Also, patients who get multiple procedures at the same time (lipo and a tummy tuck, or liposuction and a buttock enhancement) may need more sessions than someone who only gets one procedure.

What is lymphatic massage like?

Manual lymphatic drainage involves very gentle pumping movements like massage, to remove the excess of fluid from the treated area. The treatment should be gently and smooth but sometimes you could feel a bit of discomfort if the area is too sensitive after the surgery.

Before your treatment starts you need to complete your medical form followed by the initial consultation where you therapist will assess the type of surgery and stage of the surgery, any open drainages, bruises, inflammation to determinate the best way to perform the drainage. Here are some more ways that MLD can help in:

  • Encouraged the regeneration of tissue
  • Reduces the risk of infection
  • Helps to shape the area
  • Helps to get better results from your surgery
