Do you have a weak immune system?

Having a weak immune system can be a real set back. It stands to reason, therefore, that you should do everything you can to boost it. Nevertheless, not all immune systems are created equal.

For example, it is possible that you were born with an inferior immune system. This is even given a name, primary immune deficiency.

Equally, your immune system can be weakened by disease. This is known as acquired immune deficiency. Or in some instances, your immune may work against you. You may have heard this referred to as an autoimmune disease.

The truth is your immune functions somewhere on a continuum. You can take measures to improve it however weak it is. And, in addition, you can avoid certain behaviors that will have an adverse effect.

Let’s dig deeper into it.

Weak Immune System

Weak Immune System

Symptoms of a compromised immune system

Your immune system helps you to fight off viruses and infections. Therefore, if you are repeatedly suffering from infections or viruses, it’s a pretty clear indication there is an issue.

In addition, you are likely to suffer longer or more serious bouts of sickness if your immune system is too weak. And often, most of the illnesses you suffer from will be harder to treat.

Other slightly less obvious symptoms include: –

  • digestive problems
  • diarrhea
  • abdominal cramping
  • blood disorders (such as anemia)
  • and inflammation of internal organs

If you suspect that your immune system is underperforming, seek help and advice. It certainly pays to rectify it as soon as possible.

Nutrition

We asked if the immune system can be repaired. But, in truth, this is a little misleading. It is not a question of whether your immune is broken or fixed.

Like so many aspects of the body, it is something that needs consistent care and attention. So what are some of the steps you can take?

One way is through nutrition. A general diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, legumes and healthy sources of protein will help. But you should also look for some specific food items that boost the immune.

  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Almonds
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Kiwi and Papaya
  • Ginger and garlic
  • Citrus foods
  • Green Tea
  • Turmeric

All of the above can help.

Activities

Next, try and cut back on poor lifestyle habits. Smoking and alcohol both weaken the immune system. As always, try and cut back on or eliminate these if you can.

Poor sleep and stress also damage the immune. Learn how to improve your sleep. And develop ways to combat stress. Mindfulness apps are now all the rage. But in addition, massage, yoga or classes like Pilates can all help.

In addition, make sure you are practicing good hygiene procedures. You need to wash hands thoroughly after any toilet break, before preparing food and after traveling on public transport.

Finally, make sure that you get the lymphatic system working optimally. The lymphatic system plays such a vital role in sustaining a healthy immune defense.

One of the easiest ways to do this is through Manual Lymphatic Drainage. To hear more about how it can help, or to book an appointment, contact us. We will be happy to help.
